Explaining the Ubuntu on Air! Collaboration

As many of you may know, some of the sessions we have during events, or even standalone sessions, may be hosted with Google+ Hangouts on Air. This is because we are collaborating with the Ubuntu on Air! team to give the opportunity of showcasing and demonstrating processes live to our instructors. But don’t worry, we will still be having IRC-based sessions. In this post, you will find a bit more of information about this collaboration.

Ubuntu on Air! is an online show which can be found at here. As said before, it consists of Google+ Hangouts on Air on different topics, including Classroom events. So, when an instructor decides he or she wants to do a live session so they can demonstrate a process, the event will be added, both to the Ubuntu on Air! and to the Classroom calendar. In case of the Classroom calendar, it will have an [On Air] tag before the session name; same happens for the Ubuntu on Air! calendar, just that the tag is [Classroom] in this case.

While the session lasts, the video can be streamed at ubuntuonair.com. All discussion for Ubuntu on Air! Classroom sessions will take place at #ubuntu-classroom-chat on irc.freenode.net, so you don’t have to move around.. There will be an embed IRC widget on the webpage so you can have everything on your browser, and it will point to the channel. Questions should be asked the same way as on an IRC-based session, all of them should be prefixed with the word ‘QUESTION:’ without quotes. In this case, the instructor or the host will read and answer the question aloud, on the live stream.

After the session, a recording of it will be automatically uploaded to the Ubuntu on Air! YouTube Channel, and can be watched at any time.

Ubuntu Women Italy chapter class

The Ubuntu Classroom is happy to welcome Silvia Bindelli (Dolasilla) and Flavia Weisghizzi (Deindre) from the Ubuntu Women leadership team on Thursday, January 24th at 20:00 UTC team who will be presenting on UbuntuWomen-it, the Ubuntu Women chapter in Italy.

It all started around 3 years ago, when Flavia got in touch with Silvia, who she met through the UbuntuWomen group, proposing her to set up a localized chapter of the group. The idea came from the observation of the linguistic and cultural gap that may constitute a barrier to many women who, although interested in joining Ubuntu Women, don’t feel comfortable enough with a foreign language.

From then on there have been a lot: public talks throughout several events around Italy, tutoring for newcomers, a collaboration with an Italian blog dedicated to Women in technology, GirlGeekLife. Flavia and Silvia are happy to share their experience, because they both think that this idea may be brought to all locoteams, to help getting more women involved and contributing to the Ubuntu Community

Algorithms in Programming Class 3 on May 25

This week the Ubuntu Classroom welcomes Łukasz Raszkiewicz (Lerhond) (also attended by Marek Bardoński (bdfhjk)) who will be doing the third class about usage of algorithms in programming.

Algorithms in Programming Class 1&2 Logs

The Algorithms in Programming classes have been quite a popular class in Ubuntu Classroom! The first was held on April 13th by Marek Bardoński (bdfhjk) and this week, on April 27th, we had Tomek Garbus (tomek204) come in to give a class.

On Thursday, January 27th at 16:00 UTC we welcome back Mulyadi Santosa (the_hydra). You may recall his first class which was very well-received on Understanding fields in /proc/meminfo, logs available here. This time he has come to present a class on How to use top and similar tools to pinpoint system problems.

This class is loosely based on his articles Uncover the Meaning of top’s Statistics and Using Top More Efficiently. So take this opportunity to learn direct from Mulyadi, and ask any additional questions you may have!

Basics of Bug Triaging

On Wednesday, December 15th 2010 at 17:00 UTC we welcome Bug Control member Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi (devildante) for a class on the Basics of Bug Triaging.

In order to prepare for this class our instructor has requested that you have a launchpad.net account, which is required for Ubuntu bug triaging.

Intro to Ubuntu

On Friday, October 22nd at 19:30 UTC we welcome Micheal Harker (MichealH) to present an Intro to Ubuntu class.

In this class Micheal will quickly cover how users can:

• Download and Install Ubuntu
• Install their very first package
• Report consistent crashes on Launchpad

Also explained in the session is how Ubuntu came to be made and the philosophy it is based on so people really know where their (hopefully) future Primary OS came from.
