“User Days was created to be a set of courses offered during a one day period to teach the beginning or intermediate Ubuntu user the basics to get them started with Ubuntu”

In order for this event to be a success, we need instructors to lead sessions.

To volunteer to lead a session, you can contact a member of the Ubuntu User Days Team by sending an email to myself (lyz at ubuntu.com), the ubuntu-classroom at lists.ubuntu.com mailing list or by contacting us on IRC by stopping by #ubuntu-classroom-backstage on irc.freenode.net.

If you are unsure of a topic for your session, you can visit the Course Suggestions page:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDaysTeam/CourseSuggestions

If you are unsure about expectations for class instructors, please ask! You may also visit the logs from past Ubuntu User Days:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDaysTeam/natty
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDaysTeam/maverick
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDaysTeam/lucid

Please be sure to pass this announcement along to any of your friends who might be interested in leading a session.

Thanks everyone!

Every Ubuntu Open Week we have a session called “Ask Mark”, where Mark Shuttleworth answers questions from the community in IRC.

Due to scheduling conflicts this didn’t happen last Open Week, so we’re holding a special standalone event on IRC where people can ask Mark questions.

Ask Mark will take place on Wednesday the 23rd of November at 1500 UTC. To watch the session you’ll need to join #ubuntu-classroom and #ubuntu-classroom-chat on irc.freenode.net, where you will ask questions, which will then get passed onto a bot and onto Mark.

Some tips for asking questions:

Mark operates at a macro level of the project, so questions like “How do I get Flash to work?” or “Why did you pick this specific version of the kernel to ship in 11.10″ he’s likely to not know the answer to that. So unless you want a “Go ask the person who runs that team” answer try to ask questions about Ubuntu at a higher level than asking about plumbing.

Make your question count – put some thought into it, plenty of people will be asking good questions, so don’t waste an opportunity by asking something like “Where can I download 11.10?”

Here are the archives of the past sessions if you want to see what has been asked before if you want an answer.

It can get chaotic with the amount of people asking questions, so please be patient.

Here’s the classroom wiki page with information on how to participate if you need more detail. Hope to see you there!

On Saturday November 12th at 16:00 UTC the Ubuntu Women Project is hosting their second session in their Career Days initiative with a session titled “From Developer to CEO, a Career in Tech” featuring Canonical CEO Jane Silber.

Career Days is the brain child of Cheri Francis who was inspired by her own experiences in tech and studies which continue to show that women lack female role models and exposure to tech career opportunities.

So join us on Saturday, November 12th at 16:00 UTC in #ubuntu-classroom on irc.freenode.net (#ubuntu-classroom-chat for questions).

We will not be accepting questions specifically about Ubuntu, Canonical or other companies she has worked for, this session is strictly about her path and experiences in the tech industry.

These sessions are open to the whole community, you don’t need to be a woman to attend or participate.
